Founded in 1902 by the visionary Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier, Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal (AVS) is a century-old charitable institution that pioneered the renaissance of the Ayurvedic system of healthcare in India. What began as a small village clinic in Kottakkal, Kerala, has evolved into a multi-unit, multi-functional, and multi-disciplinary organization with a global reputation for excellence. Today, AVS operates Ayurvedic Hospitals and Research Centers, offering expert medical advice and authentic Ayurvedic therapies administered by trained therapists under the supervision of experienced physicians. Every treatment is supported by genuine Ayurvedic medicines manufactured in AVS’s own state-of-the-art facilities. Foundation Laid
Young P.S. Varier establishes Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal on Vijayadashami Day, marking the birth of a new era in Ayurveda.
1903
Launch of Dhanwantari, the first Ayurvedic magazine.
1909
PSV Dramatic Troupe is established to popularise Musical theatre.
1917
Aryavaidya Paathasala established at Calicut (now VPSV Ayurveda College, Kottakkal under the Kerala University of Health Sciences) offering graduate and postgraduate Ayurveda education.
1924
The Charitable Hospital established at Kottakkal, providing free Ayurveda and Allopathy treatment, therapy and medicines to the deserving.
1927
Silver Jubilee celebrated; all employees received a bonus - a progressive move for its time.
1932
Temple of Lord Viswambhara established, open to all irrespective of caste or creed.
1933
Vaidyaratnam title bestowed on P.S. Varier by the Government of India.
1939
Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier registers his Will which converts Arya Vaidya Sala into a Charitable Trust. PSV Natyasangham, the Kathakali Academy, founded - now one of India's leading Kathakali centres.
1944
P.S. Varier passes away, leaving behind a rich legacy; Board of Trustees assumes management under Aryavaidyan P.M. Varier.
1949
Mechanisation of medicine processing begins with electric equipment.
1953
Following the untimely demise of Dr. P.M. Varier in an air crash, his younger brother Dr. P.K. Warrier assumed charge as the Managing Trustee and Chief Physician, continuing the legacy of excellence and service.
1954
Golden Jubilee celebrated with national participation; AVS hosts the 36th Plenary session of All India Ayurvedic Congress under the leadership of Pandit Shiv Sharma.
1964
Annual Ayurveda Seminars initiated.
1966
Clinical Research Ward opened in collaboration with Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS).
1967
The first steam boiler inaugurated by Health Minister Smt. Sushila Nayyar, marking major advances in drug manufacturing.
1978
Research & Development Department established
1979
A new drug manufacturing unit inaugurated at Kanjikode, Palakkad.
1988
Innovation in dosage forms with machine
1999
Dr. P.K. Warrier honoured with Padma Shri by the Government of India.
2000
Ayurvedic Hospital & Research Centre, New Delhi inaugurated by President K.R. Narayanan.
2002
Centenary Year celebrated; Commemorative Postal Stamp released by the Postal Department.
2003
Centre for Medicinal Plants Research (CMPR) is inaugurated at Kottakkal by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India
2006
P.S. Varier Museum established at Kottakkal.
2010
Dr. P.K. Warrier conferred Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. In the same year a new manufacturing unit also established at Nanjangud, Karnataka.
2016
While Celebrations Centenary Year of Kozhikode Branch, the year also marked with receiving NABH accreditation for Kottakkal Ayurvedic Hospital & Research Centre.
2021
Dr. P.K. Warrier passes away a month after his 100th birthday and Dr. P.M. Varier assume charge as Managing Trustee. The year marked with launch of specialized clinics and Personal Care & Wellness products. Same year, AHRC, New Delhi received NABH accreditation.
2023
AHRC, Kochi received NABH accreditation.

Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier

The Founder

A pioneer who envisioned Ayurveda as a scientific, evidence-based medical practice, accessible to all. He founded Arya Vaidya Sala in 1902, integrating traditional healing wisdom with research, education, and innovation. Under his leadership, Ayurveda was elevated from a traditional practice to a respected branch of medical science. A pioneer of the Ayurvedic renaissance, he was a multi-faceted personality: a philanthropist, a scholar, poet, dramatist, musician, and entrepreneur. He dedicated his life to the cause of humanity. His unique Will established the institution as a Charitable Trust to ensure the perpetuity of its noble objectives. In recognition of his service to humanity, in 1933, he was conferred the title of Vaidyaratnam by the Viceroy and Governor-General of India.

P. Madhava Varier

First Managing Trustee

The Founder, in his will, had nominated the members of the first Trust Board to administer Arya Vaidya Sala after his demise. Accordingly his nephew Aryavaidyan P. Madhava Varier became the first Managing Trustee in 1944. He was in office till his tragic death in an air crash in 1953. He initiated the process of modernising Arya Vaidya Sala and laid the foundation for many later developments including the Ayurvedic Hospitals. Mechanisation of drug manufacture was initiated by him, which enabled AVS to expand its reach to larger areas.

Former Managing Trustee

Padma Bhushan Dr. P K Varier, in his capacity as Managing Trustee and Chief Physician, has led the institution for over 7 decades. Under his visionary leadership, AVS grew exponentially into India's premier Ayurvedic Hospital and Research Centre.

Dr. P. M Varier, who became the Managing Trustee of Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal in 2021 after succeeding his uncle Padmabhushan Dr. P.K. Warrier, has been associated with the institution since 1969 in various key roles. He is a reputed physician, visionary administrator, and active member of several professional and government bodies. Recognized for his contributions, he has received honors such as the Fellow of RAV (2009), Dhanwantari Award (2014) etc.
